Mobile Cancels Mardi Gras 2021
This year Mardi Gras is noiseless. Due to COVID-19 concerns, Mobile has decided to cancel all street parades and balls. Many people in the community were shocked and saddened by this horrible news. With this being the first time in history, Mardi Gras has ever canceled. “I have been celebrating Mardi Gras for as long as I can remember! Ever since I was a small child, my dad would take me,” said Marandia Thomas, a Mobile resident.
Mobile was the “center” of Mardi Gras from 1710 to around 1860. The streets of Mobile would be overflowing with crowds who celebrated Mardi Gras by participating in parades and parties. On the other hand, some people say Mardi Gras originated in New Orleans. Either way, this massive holiday draws in people from all over the world each year to celebrate and have a great time with family/friends in Mobile and New Orleans.
People who lived in other cities and were new to this traditional holiday were extremely heartbroken by this news. “I’m from Montgomery, and last year was my first-time celebrating Mardi Gras. My friends go to the parades and truly love them,” said Tyrese Lane, a student here at South Alabama. People all across the country have been affected by this deadly virus. Some individuals are strong enough to fight and overcome this virus, and others can’t.
The Mobile Mystics Mardi Gras Organization was one of the first to speak out on canceling their parade to keep everyone as safe as possible. They believed that the safety of Mobile’s community, attendees, and crew members should always come first. They will begin planning for the 2022 Mardi Gras Parade and Ball and are looking forward to celebrating Mardi Gras together next year. Despite the disappointments, Mobile residents continue to push forward and hope for a better Mardi Gras next year. “I believe it will be back, but the world is so unpredictable right now there is no telling. All we can do is hope for the best,” said Marandia Thomas.
